Aviation Safety Programs

Aviador 2023. 3. 20. 08:40

The importance of managing risk has increased as the evolution of the aviation industry has continued to move forward. Programs such as LOSA, ASAP, and ASRS have been implemented in the aviation community to manage risk and develop resolutions to observed issues within aviation operations. Such with any program, each has a positive and potentially negative aspect and is not a “fix-all” solution to any problem.

The Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) and Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) are two very similar programs. Each of them allows users to self-report observed issues or safety concerns with the ultimate goal of implementing procedures or making recommendations to deter the same issues arising in the future. Neither program was created to punish users for deviations or incidents, they were made to be a safe option for users to report without the fear of punishment (FAA, 2021). Line Operations Safety Assessments (LOSA) is another program that is geared more towards peer observation. It is still a non-punitive system but, it is a more structured program that uses trained observers to identify threats and minimize risk (FAA, n.d.). Each of these programs has significantly impacted aviation and the way users can report and handle situations that can harm the aviation community. While each of the programs has its specific benefits, it is important to note that out of the three programs LOSA provides a more proactive approach vice a reactive approach given by ASRS and ASAP.

There is nothing better than proactive engagement at all levels of aviation safety, like air traffic control, which solves problems before anything happens. Airline CRM training programs can analyze negative factors such as crew performance that affect compliance with the company's guidelines, policies, and procedures through large amounts of data obtained from LOSA, ASAP, and ASRS. It provides a desirable indicator for improving CRM (Wiener et al., 2010).
